Q2720 Early Oakleaf & Reel Friendship Quilt. More pictures. Rare Friendship quilt from eastern Pa. Presumably this is a quilt made by family members and friends for a special event such as a parting gift to a family moving west from the east coast. The centers of the blocks are ink stamped with names, dates, and cities from the Philadelphia area. Most of the blocks are dated 1843; the surname Heebner is the name used most on the quilt (Christopher Heebner, John Heebner, Susanna Heebner, Hannah Heebner, Elizabeth Heebner). Other names include Elizabeth Mitchel, Susannah Mason, Mary Elizabeth Markle, Joseph & Margaret Justin, CL Rosenberger, Eleanor Tyson, Abraham Mason, Jacob C & Sarah Markle, Ann & Peter Griffith, Daniel Casselberry, Christopher Barndollar and others. The place names are Philadelphia, Perkionning, Lower Providence, New Jersey, Roxborough, Norristown, and Cincinnati. The signatures are in excellent condition and quite legibile with no deterioration from the ink. The blocks are appliqued in a variety of turkey red prints. There are two rows of tiny decorative stitching near the center of the block. The quilt is lightly quilted "in the ditch" around all the pieces and the sashing. The top is made from high-grade, off-white cotton; the back is more of a muslin. Knife-edge binding. Excellent condition with minimal signs of use. There is no "popping" in the prints. Very large: 108x110. $2250
